Being in time heidegger5/10/2023 ![]() If man as existentialists conceive of him cannot be defined, it is because to begin with he is nothing. What do we mean here by “existence precedes essence”? We mean that man first exists: he materializes in the world, encounters himself, and only afterward defines himself. That being is man, or, as Heidegger put it, the human reality. Sartre expressed his view like this:į God does not exist, there is at least one being in whom existence precedes essence - a being whose existence comes before its essence, a being who exists before he can be defined by any concept of it. However, he misinterpreted this statement’s meaning he thought it essentially meant that human beings (Daseins) have no essence whatsoever, thus, we must make something positive out of ourselves by the choices we make (this is the meaning of his famous phrase “ existence precedes essence”). It inspired him to write his magnum opus Being and Nothingness (the “Bible” of existentialism). Jean-Paul Sartre was highly influenced by this statement. or does it? Do human beings have an essence? Heidegger said, “ The ‘essence’ of Dasein lies in its existence” ( Being and Time, Section 9, p. ![]()
